A study carried out by researchers of the UADE Foundation revealed that one out of ten workers manifests problematic levels of anxiety and that the young population is more exposed to this disorder. The researchers warned that work anxiety possibly affects personal welfare and the levels of productivity in the organization of workers.
The work context is a space that can cause tension, worry and uncertainty as a consequence of excessive demand or the perception of lack of resources. Normal anxiety has invigorating effects in the area of work; it boosts actions and becomes productive.
However, the presence of anxiety symptoms is a threat for ability, viability of objectives and the possible success of the person in the work environment. If it overcomes certain thresholds, work anxiety can have negative consequences in the worker’s life, affect its level of productivity, ability to get and grow in a job position, among others.
With the purpose of studying levels of anxiety in the working environment and its relation with careers, a research team from the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Disciplinas Proyectuales de la Fundación UADE, led by the Dr. in Psychology Daniel Bogiaizian, studied 241 active workers from different fields and professions working in the City of Buenos Aires and the Metropolitan Area.
Of the total sample, 8.3% reached significant levels of anxiety in the work environment, a high percentage compared to other populations of workers studied (for example, Canada or the United States, Sanderson & Andrews, 2006). This suggests that almost one out of ten workers polled reported problematic levels of anxiety during their jobs, which possibly affects its personal welfare and levels of productivity in the organization.
The results revealed that in the general population of workers, work anxiety decreases as age and work experience increases. This suggests that age and experience protect the individual against negative emotions and tend to reduce the levels of anxiety that can be problematic. It was also found that the age subgroup between 18-24 years old reported significantly higher levels of work anxiety.
Another finding was that more general personality dimensions like neuroticism (the tendency to easily experience negative emotions) are related to the highest levels of work anxiety.
Age and work experience seem to be two important factors. In fact, vital experiences have a central role in the construction of the individual’s affectivity. The evaluation of the moments in which the subject can be more vulnerable to anxiety symptoms and, consequently, to the possible development of problems related to anxiety, can be a contribution to the workers’ general quality.
These findings highlight the importance of recognizing the problem of work anxiety as a field of study and intervention. In this sense, Dr. Bogiaizian explained to Argentina Investiga that “the first step is to identify more vulnerable groups to be able to design specific strategies to revert the weakening effects that anxiety can have in the individual’s welfare and the correct flow of the work organization”.
