Post Neoliberal Constructions in Argentina

Latin American democracies’ transformations in the context of alternative projects to the neoliberal model which emerged “after the crisis of neoliberalism and its negative effects in the region” is the object of study of a research team. The specialists analyze political discursive arena and focus in Argentinean democracy from 2003 to these days.

With the objective of investigating the constitution of politics and articulation of identities in the Argentinean democracy which emerged after the crisis of neoliberalism, a research team from the Universidad Nacional de Villa María (UNVM), led by Susana Bonetto, deals with the political process of the last years through theoretical categories which “try to catch its specificity and particularly to consider the new ways which might contribute to deepen future democracy”.

Through an account of continuity and ruptures, the study is oriented to Latin American democracies transformations “in a context of possible alternative projects to the liberal model generated after the crisis of neoliberalism and its negative effects in the region”.

By means of political discourse analysis techniques they work on the transformations, displacements and rearticulations of the political discursive arena “related to the configuration of neoliberal and postneoliberal discursive formations; as well as the tensions originated in its different configurations”.

“We focused the analysis in Argentinean democracy after the crisis of neoliberalism, particularly from 2003 to these days, emphasizing a scarcely explored relevant dimension: the discourses and practices of the political movements and organizations which compete for the sense of democracy constituting democratic constructions in tension”, explain the teachers and researchers in the project’s premises surveyed by Argentina Investiga.

The methodology proposed is inscribed in a critical perspective and combines political discourse analysis techniques with interviews in depth to key informants and bibliographic and documental data.

“Reflection and debate on Latin American democracy assumes in the present an extraordinary political and theoretical complexity; in the meantime, as it can be thought that the interpretation of democratic transitions through the liberal theoretical perspective limited the explanation and solution of problems in the country, it is necessary to revise the tense ways assumed by the postneoliberal democratic constructions”, they ensure. In this sense, the researchers support that “the project intends to account for democratic political processes in Argentina through theoretical categories which try to catch their specificity and permit to recognize in particular institutional and symbolic contexts the deep crisis of the neoliberal models in the nineties and the appearance, proliferation and articulation of new demands and antagonisms that might build a significant reconfiguration of certain national political scenarios”.

The team is formed by María Teresa Piñero, Silvina Irusta, Virginia Tomassini, Daniela Kunz and Emiliano Baldi.
